Inscription on "Pipa Xing" by Bai Juyi: In the ten miles of Chang'an, Li Bai embarked on a boat with a Pipa, bound for Jiaozhou. As the ship arrived at the shore of Jiaozhou, it was the custom for boatmen to go for a walk. Hearing the sound of the Pipa, they were even reluctant to board the ship. After passing Lu Prefecture, a scoundrel named Lu Ji was caught coughing and attempting theft. Hanging his legs on a tree, he dared not approach the ship. How could even horses and reins pass by? Still carrying his Pipa, he played amid the masts and ropes, the first crescent moon was about to break, but he was no longer in the mood for the ceremony. Thus, he went on to pass the countryside, long falling down the well in Jiuzhou, remaining under the water but not returning to the spring.
Therefore, will people recognize how extraordinary he is? With his Pipa, Li Bai, the wonderful player, is as divine as Zhou Lang. The sound and voice are magnificent, multiplied to the utmost. With subtle news, the heavenly bird suddenly flies, following the sight of man, the sun and the stars. With white clouds surrounding the azure dragon and the white tiger, they arrived altogether from the north suburbs during the spring harvest time. Together they slumber, not being able to live, sorrowing over the flowers falling. Gazing back, they look at the border of the capital city, while the long pavilion floats and sinks, separated by land and tired of grasping the signatures.
